‘HAVE YOU DONE PILATES BEFORE?’ – ‘I’VE BEEN TO YOGA’

It’s the only question I’m ever stood waiting with baited breath for the answer – ‘Hey new person, have you ever done Pilates before?’

Why do I seriously hate asking this question?…

In case I get the ‘Well, it was a while ago, but I have been to yoga’
*Cries into hands and pray’s they have a good class*

There are people that I blame for this; and I have no doubt that I’ll probably cause offence to a few Instructors out there *shrugs shoulders*. I like to call them the ‘Old School Pilates Instructors’  – still around teaching now, mainly in clubs and gyms, who have manipulated the programme in liking to Hatha Yoga; making the general population believe that Pilates is an easy-going, meditation-bollocks sort-of-exercise, and giving the total misconception that what you are about to embark on will be comparable to sitting in a dark room for an hour chanting the words ‘om’ and leaving the class feeling peaceful and relaxed.
THE SERIOUS BANE OF MY LIFE!

Don’t get me wrong – I can get really in to yoga, it has it’s benefits (read about my rather hot experience!); but it really is in a totally different league of it’s own, and Pilates should never been thrown in to the same category as it.

LET ME PREPARE YOU FOR AN FDJ PILATES CLASS…

Pilates, with the original main man himself, used to be brutal. He was all about challenging the body, and the mind, pushing you to your limits. Somewhere over the years, the brutality got watered down, and then BOOOOOM, you have the Pilates/Yoga confusion.

I, FAYE D JONES, VOW TO BRING BACK A BIT OF BRUTALITY

Because, well, what’s the point in doing something that has no physical and mental impact or challenge?

I challenge your body to strengthen, lengthen, tone and flex. I challenge you from the tiny tips of your fingers, right down to the tippy-toes of your feet. Your abs, shoulders, arms, legs, bum and back. And I challenge your mind to control your body.
Please don’t expect anything less than 1 very achievable, progressive, slightly brutal challenge!

Trust me, after a class with me, you won’t ever compare Pilates to Yoga again!
